Friends’ enormous popularity can be gauged by the fact that a reunion special episode that aired on Thursday is currently the most talked-about thing in pop culture. It appears to be driving HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s streaming service, subscribers.
The fact that the show, created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, is still as popular as today, it was in the 1990s is a testament to the star power of its cast. Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer all contributed to the success of Friends.
Since the show ended, here’s what the cast has been up to.
Jennifer Aniston (Rachel Green)
It could be argued that Jennifer Aniston is the most well-known of the main Friends cast members. In 2003, she co-starred with Jim Carrey in the comedy film Bruce Almighty. She also starred in The Break-Up, Marley & Me, The Bounty Hunter, Just Go with It, Horrible Bosses, and We’re the Millers, among other successful comedies. In 2019, she returned to television with Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, which featured Reese Witherspoon, a Friends guest star, and Steve Carell. She is also the show’s executive producer.
Courteney Cox (Monica Geller)
She was the biggest star in the cast when Friends first aired. Aside from Friends, she also appeared in Scream, a horror-slasher film from the 1990s. Cox’s most well-known works after Friends include the drama series Dirt and the sitcom Cougar Town. With 2014’s Just Before I Go, Cox tried her hand at directing, with less-than-successful results.
Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe Buffay)
Kudrow starred in, wrote for, and produced HBO’s comedy-drama The Comeback shortly after Friends ended. She has also appeared in critically acclaimed shows such as The Good Place, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and RuPaul’s Drag Race, among others. Her filmography includes P.S. I Love You, Booksmart, and The Girl on the Train.
Matthew Perry (Chandler Bing)
Matthew Perry went on to star in films like The Ron Clark Story, Numb, and Birds of America after Friends. His TV credits include starring roles in The Odd Couple and The Good Wife, as well as recurring roles in Mr. Sunshine and other shows.
David Schwimmer (Ross Geller)
Schwimmer prioritised film and theatre after Friends ended. In the 2005 film Duane Hopwood, he played the titular character. In the Madagascar films, he also plays Melman. After Friends, his most well-known role has to be that of Robert Kardashian in American Crime Story.
Paul Rudd (Mike Hannigan)
Rudd, who is now a big star, played Mike Hannigan, Phoebe’s love interest and third husband, on Friends. In Marvel Cinematic Universe films, he is best known for playing thief-turned-superhero Scott Lang, also known as Ant-Man. He’s also appeared in films such as Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Mute, and This Is 40. He’s also hosted several episodes of NBC’s Saturday Night Live variety show.
Cole Sprouse (Ben Geller)
Cole Sprouse, then a child actor, co-starred with Carol Willick as Ross’ son. He continuously acted in movies such as The Kings of Appletown and Five Feet Apart. His most well-known role is Jughead Jones in the Riverdale TV series, in which he plays the lead role.
Maggie Wheeler (Janice)
Wheeler, who played Janice on Friends, has also appeared on ER, Californication, and Archer (through voice). She also appeared in the 2006 sequel to Dr. Dolittle.
James Michael Tyler (Gunther)
James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther on Friends, hasn’t been as active in the entertainment industry as the rest of the cast. He’s appeared on Scrubs, Episodes, and Iron Chef America, among other shows.
