The famous villain, who students and staff at Hogwarts are afraid to name, has a name that can be translated to reveal a hidden meaning, and it’s genius.

One Redditor pointed out that the vol de mort also has a very fitting translation in French.

That’s right, JK Rowling used many different words and phrases when she wrote the books, and they said that. It’s really interesting to see how she did that.

Flight from death is another translation Voldemort may have. “De” can mean either “of” or “from,” depending on the situation in which it is used in French. Because Voldemort was a mighty and dangerous wizard, his main goal was to become so powerful that he could avoid death, which he thought was the ultimate weakness.

When translated from French, Voldemort (vol-de-mort) means “flight of death,” which is scary. Voldy can fly, and he has a bad reputation for killing witches and wizards, so that’s pretty close to how it should be.
