Millie Bobby Brown opens up about her feelings surrounding the end of Stranger Things. After a successful 2016 debut with Stranger Things season 1, Brown emerged as one of the sci-fi series’ breakout stars due to her impressive performance as the super-powered tween Eleven. The character has since become a staple member of the Hawkins kids gang, often driving the plot of subsequent season,s or becoming the solution to the town’s supernatural threats. In the latest season of Stranger Things, the series dug deeper into Eleven’s past as she sought to get her powers back, revealing her connection to the season’s terrifying villain, Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).
Stranger Things season 4, released in two installments with the finale airing in July, was revealed to be the show’s penultimate season, meaning that season 5 will be the last. Stranger Things season 5 will have major fallout from season 4 to contend with, since disaster struck Hawkins in the finale and brought the Upside Down into the characters’ hometown. The writers have previously teased the final season’s episode count, runtimes, and a few other details about the season, including a confirmation that filming will commence in 2023. Now, Brown talks her reaction to the series ending.
“It’s gonna be hard, of course. It’s like my high school, I grew up on the show. They’re like my school friends. You know, it’s gonna be hard. But I’m never gonna not see them again, and I’m sure Netflix will make it last for as long as it can, and…it is just so much a part of my career and so formative, and I’ll always remember my experience with Stranger Things.”
Could El Appear In A Stranger Things Spinoff?
Brown’s implication that Netflix could be eyeing another foray into the Stranger Things universe after season 5 wouldn’t be surprising, considering the streaming service’s interest in expanded universes, which has resulted in the extension of several franchises in recent years. In 2021, Netflix head Ted Sarandos also referred to the sci-fi show as a “franchise being born,” teasing potential spin-offs, including one possibly starring Brown’s character. Though Brown’s career has been progressing well with the Enola Holmes film franchise, her comments indicate that she could have an interest in returning as Eleven after season 5. If that’s the case, and plans for a spin-off do progress, there are several options for the plot depending on the events of season 5.
With Netflix eager to keep Stranger Things around for a long time given the series’ popularity and record-breaking success, a potential spin-off could offer more insight to Eleven’s past or reveal what happens to her after season 5, which will see the character face her biggest foe yet in Vecna. Alternately, the show could go a different route and return to the season 2 storyline of Eleven’s sister, Kali (Linnea Berthelsen), possibly introducing more super-powered kids who were the result of Hawkins Lab’s experiments. Regardless of possible spin-offs, Brown is sure to return in Stranger Things season 5 for the hit show’s final outing.
